Renovated Home is Mountainous and Modern
On a sprawling, country property in Somers, Connecticut, sits a majestic home that is remarkable because its rustic exterior offers little hint that the interior is uniquely contemporary.
An abundance of stone, vertical cedar siding, custom copper chimney caps and cupolas with antique weathervanes give the exterior charm, as do metal roofing accents, copper gutters and eclectic copper downspouts. Inside, large windows, sleek lighting, white oak flooring and a glass staircase railing trumpet the custom contemporary look.
“That’s one of my favorite things about this house,” says Laplante Construction President Bill Laplante. “The exterior is rustic and drastically different from the interior.”
We completed a renovation of this home in 2023. Only one, full-stone portion of the previous low-pitched ranch is original, which offered unique project challenges. “We worked diligently to match the decades-old stone and the workmanship as well,” says Bill.
Many materials in the home were sourced by a Spanish manufacturer, Porcelanosa. The kitchen features Porcelanosa wall-hung cabinetry and backsplash with accents that include glass shelving and display doors. In the living room, a striking floor-to-ceiling fireplace is also tiled with Porcelanosa.
The three bathrooms in the home also feature Porcelanosa in the large-format tile on the floors and walls, and wall-hung vanities are Porcelanosa as well. Stunning fixtures and glass shower stalls give even these baths a contemporary flair.
Other highlights of the home include a greenhouse, SwimEx indoor lap pool and sauna on a lower level, and large and ample Pella windows and transoms in the dining room that offer wonderful light and tremendous views of nearby hills.
